How to Remove Odors from Washing Machine
There are many causes of unpleasant odors emanating from the washing machine. From mildew spores, mold, and bacteria to leftover detergent, there are several places for odor-causing elements to hide. Removing odors from watching machines can be a challenge, but by using any of the below steps, it can be an easy fix.
Let’s dive in!
How to Get Odors Out of Washing Machine
Method 1: Clean with Vinegar
A great way to remove odors from washing machines is by using a homemade cleaning solution consisting of equal parts distilled white vinegar and hot water. First, pour it into your washing machine’s detergent compartment along with your regular detergent. Then, allow the machine to finish a whole cycle before rinsing its contents out of the machine with cold water.
Method 2: Use Baking Soda and Peroxide
Using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is another effective method for removing unpleasant smells from washing machines. Simply pour a cup of baking soda into the detergent compartment and allow it to run through a full cycle. Then, pour one cup of distilled white vinegar into the washing machine’s water-fill chamber and run another entire cycle with hot water.
At the end of this step, you should do two things: open the washing machine door and allow it to air out for 30 minutes before closing it. Then, rerun a full cycle with no detergent to rid the machine of any remaining smell.
Method 3: Clean with Salt and Baking Soda
Another way to remove odors from washing machines is a mixture of one cup baking soda, one cup salt, and six cups of hot water. Pour the contents into the machine’s detergent compartment and allow it to run through an entire cycle before rinsing out with cold water.
Method 4: Clean with Vinegar and Baking Soda
Adding one cup of baking soda, one cup of white vinegar, and two cups of distilled white vinegar to your washing machine’s detergent compartment is another effective method for ridding it of musty odors. Allow the mixture to run through a full cycle before rinsing out with cold water and opening the door to allow for ventilation.
Method 5: Bleach, Baking Soda, and Vinegar Solution
Another homemade cleaner can be made by using one cup bleach, one cup distilled white vinegar, one-half cup baking soda, and two cups hot water. Run the machine through a full cycle followed by another rinse with cold water. Ensure the door is opened and left to air out before closing it.
How to Get Smells Out of Washing Machines
Method 1: Clean with Dish Soap
Rinsing your washing machine will also help you remove odors. Fill the detergent compartment with a dish soap solution consisting of one teaspoon liquid dish soap, two cups of distilled white vinegar, and five gallons of hot water. Allow the washing machine to finish its cycle before rinsing out any remaining residue with cold water.
Method 2: Use Baking Soda Alone
Pouring about a cup of baking soda into the washing machine’s detergent compartment will help to eliminate odors. Then, run a full cycle with no clothes to remove any remaining residue and freshen up the machine.
How To Get Gasoline Smell Out Of Washing Machine
Doing any kind of physical job outside involving heavy or small equipment will have you dealing with gasoline. Gasoline has a very pungent smell to it that will be hard to get out without the right soap and detergents.
Just getting home and throwing it in the machine will not remove the gasoline odor from your shirt or pants, that will only make your washing machine smell like gasoline. This smell will ruin the machine for good along with other clothes you put in it. If it’s you or your wife doing the laundry, someone will get really mad when they smell the gasoline in a 2000$ washing machine.
Getting the gasoline smell out of the washing machine
Steps:
- If your washing machine has a sanitize option, select that option. If it doesn’t a normal wash cycle will do the job.
- Add 1 teaspoon of dawn dish soap to the washing machine soap dispenser. Very important, do not add more. The sud will overflow in the machine and come out if you add too much dawn dish soap.
- Set the washing machine to its longest wash setting at the hottest temperature it can get to.
- When the cycle is fully finished, give it a smell. If the gasoline odor is still in the machine, try this next method below.

Do not worry about the vinegar smell, this will come out easily just by adding some laundry detergent to remove it. To help the process, you can add some bleach to the machine as well. Just make sure to give the machine 3 rinse cycles and this should remove the gasoline odor.
Getting gasoline smell off your clothes
You will need a small bucket and some dawn dish soap. Any part of the clothes that have gasoline on it, will need to be soaked in the bucket of warm water along with 3 squirts of dawn dish soap. Leaving it to soak for a day will gradually remove the odor. The clothes will have stains or bleach spots on them because of the gasoline.
