How To Get Silly Putty Out Of Carpet
As a kid growing up, I use to love playing with silly putty all over the house especially in the living room where the carpet is. Little did I know that getting silly putty out of your carpet is a living nightmare if you try to just use your hands alone instead of a tool or lubricant.
Letting silly putty or slime stay on your carpets and mats overtime to get hardened, will even make it worse for you to remove it. At the end of this article, I will be giving you some tips and tricks that you should know and try that will prevent this from happening again. Below will be a guide with different methods to remove the putty from your carpets with pictures showing you how to do it.Â
How to get Silly Putty out of Carpet
These methods below will either break down the silly putty or lubricant it enough to make it slide right off the fabric material. Link to all these products will be listed below if you do not have them already.

Methods to Remove Silly Putty From Carpet
Use Goo Gone On Putty
Goo gone is a great all-around glue and adhesive remover. Having your kid getting silly putty in the suede couch or carpet will ruin it if not removed properly. To use the goo gone to remove silly putty from your carpets.
Pour some of the goo gone it and let it sit for 5 minutes, mix some warm water with some dawn dish soap and scrub the area. I did this like 3 times and the silly putty was gone by then.
If you buy the goo gone with the adhesive remover, you can use that too as well to help remove the putty.
Using WD-40
WD-40 will surprise you in so many different ways, you can even use it to clean the headlights on your car. One other thing it is good at as well as to remove silly putty from your carpet. This process involves a few steps.
Step 1:
Spray the wd- 40 on the area of the carpet that is covered in silly putty. Let the wd- 40 sit for 20 minutes to do its work.
Step 2:
Uses a microfiber cleaning cloth with some warm water and wipe the silly putty out of the carpet. Make sure not to wipe the putty onto other areas of the carpet.
Step 3:
If some of the silly putty is still remaining on the carpet, use a scrub brush and scrub out what is remaining.
Using Rubbing Alcohol To Remove Putty
I love to use rubbing alcohol to help clean things. The best thing about rubbing alcohol is that it will not bleach or ruin most material it gets on, so it is totally safe to be used on your carpets. The rubbing alcohol will be the slowest to break down the silly putty, but it will eventually get the job done.
To use the rubbing alcohol to get out the silly putty, spray some on the area or wet a microfiber cleaning cloth and pat the area with it. The putty will slowly be dissolved and you can just wipe the area where it was with some warm water.
How to get Thinking Putty out of Carpet
Thinking putty can be removed the same way as how you remove silly putty. You can use the wd-40 cleaning method to remove the thinking putty if you only have rubbing alcohol at home.
If you have a bottle of rubbing alcohol at home, you can use that method too. If you are not in any rush to remove it, you can order goo gone from amazon or go to the closest supermarket near you and grab one.
How to Remove Slime from Carpet
Removing slime from your carpets is really easy to do. Even if the slime is dried up, you can still use this method. Vinegar can be used on the slime to break it down, you can spray it on it or just pour some on the spot and leave it for 20 minutes.
When the 20 minutes are up, all you need to do is use a microfiber cleaning cloth or paper towel with some warm water and wipe the slime out of your carpet.
Note:
All the putties are the same, they just have different names on them. But you can get them out your carpet with the same cleaning method using Goo Gone and warm water with a microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe it out after 5 to 10 minutes.
Tips to Prevent Slime or Silly Putty From Getting On Your Carpet Or Clothes
When you have kids at home who love to play with slime and putty, whether it is Thinking Putty, Magic Putty, Or Silly Putty you need to prevent them from getting it on other things. Most of the putty is the same but with different names.
Tip 1:
Have a dedicated area where kids can go and use the putty and slime. In this area, they know they can freely play with it without worrying.
Tip 2:
Make sure to make them cover their hair before they start playing with the slime or putty because if it gets in their hair they will have to get their hair cut out to remove it properly. Some of the methods above will not work because the hair will break.
Tip 3:
If you do not have a dedicated area for the kids to play with the slime and putty, make them wear an apron and cover the floor with a plastic cover.Â
Tip 4:
Have specific clothes that they wear each time they use the putty or slime. This will stop you from ruining more clothes.
